Tents 2 Homeless Gives Back

Working Toward a Brighter Future

About

In 2020, Michael Meehan started buying dozens of tents on Amazon for $20 each. Then he drove around Atlanta giving the tents out to the homeless. He soon realized they need much more than a tent, they need survival gear, such as portable lighting, a heat source for cooking, and a sleeping bag.

In 2022, Michael started Tents2Homeless to gather donations to give more tents and survival gear to people in need. All the money donated goes to helping the homeless.

What We Do

Meaningful Work

Why A Tent?

1. Keeps you warm. It adds an extra layer of warmth on cold nights.

2. Protects you from the elements. Keeps you dry, out of the wind and snow. It even acts as a sunscreen on sunny days.

3. Somewhat protects your survival gear. A person is less likely to unzip your tent to steal something.

4. Gives you peace of mind. A sense of home.

5. Protects you from bugs, animals and other people.

Why Homeless Don't Go To Shelters

1. Many shelters are temporary and emergency housing. They don’t address the long-term homeless person.

2. Many shelters have waiting lists or long processing lines that could take many hours. Beds are in short supply.

3. Some shelters have rigid hours and rules. They say it’s too difficult to abide by them.

4. They infantilize the homeless. They treat them like children asking where they have been or where they are going.

5. Sometimes there may be other aggressive and loud homeless people that can make things uncomfortable. Some terrible things can happen in a shelter.

6. They may be mentally ill and unable to deal with the process and procedures.

7. They may have public health concerns.
